Pulse video stills © 1992The video for Pulse incorporates Maria & Philip's shared interest in the gory and messy mutative side of sci-fi. Leaning heavily on their dense consumption of sexy android apocalyptic anime of the time, Maria invents herself as mutant-gun-toting spermocidal latex bitch from dimension X. The video pays delirious homage to everything from Space Adventure Cobra to The Terminator, with Maria having a hell of a time dressing up and freaking out.

Bitch video stills © 1990For Maria's track Bitch, she imagined herself as the archetypal figure so scorned and disdained by those who generally view women as forever somehow stepping out of their place. Maria's lyrics condense a lifetime of hearing these taunts, from her family, her school, and the professional art world in which she would ultimately reside. But rather than bemoan things, Maria - like her artwork - is a celebration of fuck-you attitude combined with self-mocking theatricality.
The video clip plays on this stance, with Maria performing not simply as a 'self-empowered woman' (boring) but as an inverted image of that positive figure. As Maria would say: you either get it or you don't.
The video was shot on U-Matic video in a studio at Phillip Institute of Technology, utilizing basic chromo-key and a few costume changes. The backgrounds are solely close-ups of the costumes she wears in the video. A middle section incorporates Maria's documentation footage of her Maria Kozic is BITCH billboard. The zoom lens is thoroughly over-used, in keeping with the stupid pharma-phallic thrust of so many rave/club music-videos of the time.
